A destination wedding in Salamanca will be an unforgettable experience. This ancient city, famous for its university founded by king Alfonso IX in the 13th century, is well preserved, with many Romanesque churches to choose from for the big event, besides turreted palaces, faded convents, and colleges attended by scholars from throughout Europe. The university atmosphere gives this ancient city a young and vibrant feel.
In its day, Salamanca was known as one of "the four leading lights of the medieval world," alongside Paris, Oxford and Bologna, in Italy. The city’s intellectual life continues to this day, and every year a large number of foreign students arrive in the summer to bring added life. Because of the world-renown Salamanca University, the city was named a "World Heritage City" by UNESCO, one of six such cities in Spain, the most in any country in the world.
A Salamanca wedding photo shoot will include the magnificent surroundings such as the Plaza Mayor, an 18th-century baroque square, and possibly the most beautiful public plaza in the country. Walk through the arcade of shops and enjoy all of the honey-colored buildings the center of the city has to offer. Admire the façade of the town’s landmark, “Casa de las Conchas”, a 15th century house decorated with hundreds of scallop shells sculpted in stone.
Of all the beautiful historic religious sites of Salamanca, St. Stephen’s convent is certainly the most dramatic. The church, an example of the late Gothic, features a golden-brown Plateresque façade that rivals the cathedral’s in magnificence. Inside is one of the cities greatest art treasures, the high altar created in 1693 at the height of the baroque, in what was to be known as churrigueresco style.
A tip for your destination wedding banquet in Salamanca: if it’s summer season, treat your guests to one of the town’s most popular delicacies leche helada, a very refreshing almond and vanilla drink. They’ll never forget it, and neither will you.
