Christopher Columbus is believed to have stopped for a time in Las Palmas on his way to America. After having the rudder fixed on one of his small fleet he embarked on his great voyage of discovery. Las Palmas is the capital of Gran Canaria. Strung out along two waterfronts it contains all the ingredients necessary for a fascinating and enjoyable wedding in the Canary Islands. On the southern side of the town the old quarter, La Vagueta, are various sights of historical interest. The cathedral is the centrepiece. It took four centuries to complete and is an odd mixture of 19th century neo-classical and gothic architecture. Plaza Santa Ana is remarkable for its statues of dogs – the Canaries are named after a particular breed of dog, canum in latin. Casa Museo Columbus is housed in a palace where Columbus may have stayed on his famous visit and includes nautical artefacts and models of Columbus’s three ships. While you’re up on this side of town, do not miss the Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno and see why it has a reputation for some of the best avante-garde shows in Spain.
The northern side of Las Palmas is where most of the action is at night. You and your wedding guests might come here to the bars and restaurants, but on your actual wedding day somewhere like the romantic and intimate in the historic quarter could be a perfect place to hold a your wedding reception in Las Palmas. On the outside patio draped with flowers the wedding couple and guests can enjoy real Canarian cuisine and sip on the best wines made in the Canary Archipelago.
Of course time on the beach will be high on the list of any visitor to Gran Canaria. Las Palmas has Las Canteras beach but you might prefer to travel to the southern coast of the compact island to enjoy the many beautiful beaches around Maspalomas. Go the longer route along the northern road to the pretty village of Agaete and eat lunch. From there continue on to the central highlands, all the way to one of the coolest places on the island, Mirador Los Pechos.
From the Mirador you will see the whole island and its host of charming spots to spend the precious and memorable days of your honeymoon in Las Palmas. Between you and the golden sands of the south are pine forests and the attractive highland town of San Bartolemé de Tirijana and behind you on the route back to Las Palmas the green, tropical environs of villages like Teror and Moya.
