Destination Weddings in Oviedo, Spain
If the idea of getting married in Spain appeals to you, but you prefer green hills and tumbling rivers to dry plains and sun-baked beaches then look north to Oviedo.
The Asturian capital Oviedo is a university town that has old world charm and a lively contemporary scene – two factors that make it an excellent venue for your destination wedding in Spain. It is the only part of Spain not to be conquered by the moors so there is little of Arab influence in the architecture. Instead it is the setting of an architecture that is truly unique, Asturian Pre-Romanesque, of which the church Santa Mari de Naranco is a superb example. Perched on Mount Naranco it is a great vantage point to survey the whole city.
Standing proud in the city skyline is the gothic cathedral that shelters Oviedo’s most precious monument, the Cámara Santa (Holy Chamber), which in turn guards the gold leaf Cross of the Angels. The cross, commissioned by Alfonso the chaste, bears the inscription “May whosoever dare move me from this place rightfully mine be struck down by a bolt of divine lightning” – something the wedding couple might perhaps choose to incorporate into their vows.
Emerging from the Cámara Santa and leaving the bustle of town there are plenty of options available to those in need of fresh air. Take a romantic walk in the emerald green hills or journey to the charming coastal town of Cudillero. The sea air will give you an excellent appetite for the delicacies of Asturian cuisine of the sort that graced the table of Spain’s crown prince Felipe and his Asturian wife on the day of their wedding in 2004.
The freshest seafood stands high on any local menu. If hake, cockles, scallops, octopus or baby eels don’t appeal, then feast on delicious meats and the local blue cheeses. Fragrant local wines will add that authentic finishing touch to your wedding in Spain.
