Gijón began as a fishing settlement nearly 3,000 years ago and is a favourite Asturian destination for Spaniard today. Getting married in Spain you too can discover the delights of this busy and eclectic city.

Take a walk arm in arm with your fiancée the breadth of the city along the promenade that lines San Lorenzo beach. Or scale the hill to Cerro de Santa Catalina, a park on the tip of the peninsula that provides a breathtaking view of the glittering Cantabrian Sea. You might also like to tour the 16 sculptures installed around the town in recent years.  Amongst them is Eligio del Horizonte, a massive work by the internationally renowned Basque sculptor Chillida.

When it comes time to celebrate before the big day you and your wedding guests should visit the former fisherman’s quarter Cimedevilla, Gijón’s main tourist attraction. Full of romantic corners and enlivened by visitors and students from the university it sits on a narrow peninsula that divides the city. Stroll its narrow cobble streets and visit some of the plentiful bars. Here, always vibrant and festive, is the perfect place to be getting married in Spain.

The local Museo de la Gaita (Bagpipe museum) is testament to the Celtic roots of Asturian society. You might choose to have a piper provide a little of the food of love at your wedding ceremony and reception. For nourishment of a more literal sort you can indulge in the best seafood dishes the region has to offer and sip on fresh local wines.
